When Street Teams Go Rogue

Aside Posted on Updated on

street team generic logo“A street team is a term used in marketing to describe a group of people who ‘hit the streets’ promoting an event or a product. ‘Street Teams’ are promotional tools that have been adopted industry-wide as a standard line item in marketing budgets by entertainment companies, record labels, the tech industry, corporate brand marketers, new media companies and direct marketers worldwide.” (Source: Wikipedia)  The concept has been used in non-traditional or guerrilla marketing to reach new consumers, for many years.

Many authors, especially new and/or independent authors, believe they “need” to have Street Teams in order to remain competitive.  Street Teams are fantastic when they are carefully organized and administered.  The author should select a trusted person experienced in managing online groups of volunteers to lead or supervise the Street Team.  The members may not be paid staff, but they are working on behalf of the author,   There should be clearly delineated expectations, tasks and goals, and each member should sign an agreement with a confidentiality clause, standards of behavior and causes for termination.

Yes, it does sound like a modified employment contract, because Street Teams have been “hired” to promote authors.   While most people on Street Teams behave ethically and professionally, there are a few bad apples who have turned a good idea into nightmare scenarios for some authors.    Sadly, the bad apples feel a need to bully others, on behalf of the author.  Ultimately, the author is left with the negative publicity and the bad apples move on, unscathed.

As someone who managed volunteers, for a living, I understood the thin line between asking for help, directing volunteers’ energy and harnessing this energy to accomplish the agency’s goals.   All while honoring the volunteers’ spirit of service, time commitments and expertise.   Timely firing of ineffective or disruptive volunteers was a necessary part of equation.  Street Teams should be no different.

no bullyingLast week, Joanna Wylde’s following Facebook post struck a chord with me.   As a member of many Street Teams, I have unfortunately, run across the people she described in her post.  In fact, I left a few Street Teams that became competitive, uncomfortable, and began harassing bloggers and/or reviewers that rated the authors’ book anything less than four or five-stars on Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Goodreads.  I am not proud of the fact, that when the author asked, I “disliked” another person’s reviews or left snarky comments (which I deleted when I left the Street Team).  It was not my place to judge another person’s book review.

Ms. Wylde noted that Street Teams are merely one way to promote an author’s work, but not the only one.  Below are her eloquent words.  (Here is the link to her original post.)

On National Public Radio, there is a series called “This I Believe,” where people share things that are important to them as individuals and members of society. Today I want to share what’s important to me.

I believe it’s wrong to throw poo at people.

Unfortunately, that statement isn’t a joke. Recently I’ve been trying to live by the motto “Not my circus, not my monkeys” because the indie world is full of drama, and engaging in drama doesn’t help me hit my daily word count. This morning I woke up to discover so much monkey shit flying that I need an umbrella. I have to say something for the sake of my conscience, because I feel sick.

I learned today that yet another blogger has given up after significant harassment from “readers” supporting an author. She shut down her blog because she can’t take the abuse any longer, and she’s created a new identity to hide from the bullies.

How fucked up is that?

People start blogs because they love to read and feel passionate about sharing that love. They work their butts off because they believe in our writing community, and they’re being rewarded like this? It would be easy to dismiss this as one situation where a blogger was being overly sensitive if I hadn’t seen so much of it myself in the past months. I’ve been a target at times, and I’m here to tell you it sucks ass and I want it to stop.

The people flinging poo are called street teams, and they are a form of organized marketing support for a specific writer. Most writers direct their street teams personally. The goal of a street team is to promote an author’s work and the street team model has been held up as a viable and effective strategy for authors by many experts.

I disagree.

Street teams started out as a reasonable strategy for authors, but so many of these teams have degraded into organized gangs of bullies–creating an atmosphere of fear and hostility detrimental to our entire community–that I think it’s time to stop using them (as authors) or joining them (as readers).

I think it’s time even if you have the best of intentions and don’t mean harm to anyone.

Why? Because they are part and parcel of a publishing world where copying another author’s work has become routine and blatant, and authors gleefully celebrate successes built on lies. Incrementally, the boundaries of decency are eroding and street teams are ground zero for this erosion. Their tactics are horrible, including fake positive reviews for the author they’re championing and fake negative ones for those the team sees as competition for their chosen pet.

It’s gotten to the point where you can’t trust reviews unless you know the reviewer–how does this ultimately help ANY of us as authors? We’re undermining the very system that’s allowed authors to break free and reach readers directly. It’s cannibalism. None of us can sell books if the readers can’t trust what’s said about our work.

It doesn’t stop with reviews or spam, either. Sometimes street teams send hate-filled messages, and have gone so far as to make false accusations and tell lies about their targets. To the best of my knowledge, no street team has physically assaulted a blogger or reader to try and force them to buy a book, but they’ve done almost everything else.

So what does it take to become a target of these teams? Bloggers are attacked for failing to review a book, for giving a negative review, or for choosing not to participate in promotion for the author running the team. For authors, the “crimes” leading to such attacks include a shared release date, a shared subgenre or just speaking out publicly about what’s really happening behind the scenes. I fully expect a fresh attack after I hit publish on this essay.

Bring it on.

For me, silence has become complicity. I’m drawing my line right here, right now–I’m not willing to be an accomplice for one minute longer. If this was happening at my child’s school I wouldn’t stand by, and I’m not going to stand by professionally, either. This is my community and it’s worth fighting for.

That’s important, so I’m going to repeat it. Our community of readers, writers and bloggers is worth fighting for. We need each other.

I’m begging you – if you’re an author, QUESTION what you’ve been told about marketing. Do you really NEED a street team? Ultimately, if your success is built on the corpses of bloggers and other writers, you are destroying the people you need to help you in the long run. An organized gang of bullies is NOT good marketing and it’s no way to live. Can you guarantee that nobody on your team will ever bully someone? How would you even know if they did? Of course, that’s assuming that the authors are innocent, which isn’t always the case… That’s why readers have to be part of the solution, too. As a group, we have to say NO MORE.

It’s wrong to throw poo at people.

Hurting other people to make a quick buck is ALWAYS WRONG.

Writing is a marathon, not a sprint, and nobody finishes a marathon if they have to carry a hundred pounds of shit on their back the whole way.

Let’s drop the shit and start running together, because we aren’t monkeys.

Would I Lie For You?

Would I lie about a “haunting” for my 15 minutes of fame? No. I am not a skeptic; I’m a believer. However, I am so deeply rooted to my beliefs that I don’t have to lie. I’m also a seeker of truth.

Don’t get me wrong. I blog to be read. I co-host a weekly radio show (Archer Paranormal Radio) to be heard. And I hope to convert just one person. Dangle the reality TV carrot and I will bite. Hint that I should over-embellish and I’ll refuse to swallow.

There is absolutely no reason to embellish and to stretch the truth. Some places are simply not haunted. When the Ghost Radar is silent, it’s S-I-L-E-N-T. Rarely do I capture EVPs. I get a lot of orbs; however, I…

A reader who prefers not to be named sends in this first-hand account of yesterday’s march-and-melée at the UCV Campus.

It began with the usual confusion about the starting point and route; uncertainty has become a mainstay in recent weeks of street mobilizations. Sophisticated production and days-in-advance mass publicity for these events are a thing of the past: there is no time or money to build tarimas or rent audio equipment. Instead, we run on tactically-convened, stripped-down, home-made rallies that tend to change at the last-minute.

Art. 43 of the Law on Political Parties, Public Meetings and Protests clearly states that every resident of this Republic have the right to free assembly, and need only notify the municipal authorities of plans to hold a public gathering, 24 hours prior to said event. To notify, as you may have gathered, is quite different from to ask for permission, which…

A Toast to Transforming the Blog

Aside Posted on Updated on

blog to change your lifeI began this blog when I returned to undergraduate studies and believed it would document my experiences through Nursing School.  During the process, I found myself wanting to talk about any topic, except Nursing school and it became a place to recharge my soul batteries.   I also enjoyed posting book reviews and discussing different literary genres with readers. The blog’s transformation was gradual, and I was happy to let it happen, organically.

Yesterday, “Chronicles of a 40-Something Nurse Wannabe” evolved into “Reading, Drinking and Dancing with a Chaser of Snark.” The name and layout makeover reflected my blogging persona and recurring themes of this blog.   It bids fond farewell to a name that served me well, but no longer represents where I am in my life.  Hubby helped synthesize the name.   He does not know it yet, but I hope to interview him for future posts, to get “The Former Sergeant’s Perspective.”

Over the next weeks, you will see specific posts on designated days, especially featured book reviews.  There may even be a “Grand Opening.”  I will continue to discuss current events, reality television and topics that move me.   All previous posts were saved and may be read by searching by topic.

Thank you for being on this journey with me.   Stay tuned for more!

El Bachelor Reaches Schmuckasaurus Stature During the Final Rose Ratings Bonanza.

Posted on Updated on

SPOILER ALERT:  If you have not watched the final episode of Juan Pablo’s season on “The Bachelor”, please stop reading now.

Left: Nikki Ferrell Right: Clare Crawley
Left: Nikki Ferrell
Right: Clare Crawley

In one of the most bizarre, yet strangely entertaining seasons of The Bachelor, we arrived at the Come-to-Jesus…I mean “The Final Rose” show.  To this point, Juan Pablo was rejected by two contestants who left the show, rather than being eliminated by him, and summarily dismissed any woman who asked him anything deeper than “would you like fries with that?”  The finale became the battle of the blondes – Nikki, the Pediatric Nurse and Clare, the hairstylist.

Last week we learned that there may have been a more intimate moment between Juan Pablo and Clare, that he disclosed (bragged about) when he spent time with Andi in the Fantasy Suite.  Whatever was said, was bad enough to have Andi rip into Juan Pablo and and walk off the show.

Ironically, he tweeted “The day has COME… Finally TODAY the soap opera comes to an END… 😃” and “The END of Mi Aventura STARTS now on ABC…” before tonight’s show aired.  Soap opera?  Aventura?  Oh, boy.  We knew the man was clueless, but surely someone at ABC could have found him a publicist, or at least a keeper?  Naw, Juan Pablo went rogue.  And it was priceless.

juan-pablo-doucheIt was no surprise to anyone, but Clare, when Juan Pablo told her he was not choosing her.  After letting the woman declare her love for him, he made some awkward comments about friendship and leaned in, presumably, to hug her.  Clare, held up her hand, told him off and walked away.  In doing so, she earned my respect but she could have saved herself the heartache by listening to her oldest sister who expressed her “displeasure” at the Juan Pablo’s lack of commitment, during the Hometown Dates.   I am sure the women meant to say, “run away from Schmuckasaurus as fast as you can.”  His comments to host Chris Harrison, as he discussed Clare’s exit were truly cringe-worthy and there were audible groans from the studio audience.  Clare chose not want to “reunite” with Juan Pablo during the live show and indicated that he made some deeply inappropriate sexual comments he made about their time together..  In his defense, being a class act was never part of his skill set.

At this point in the show, I was laughing and hoping (praying) that Nikki would follow Clare’s lead and dump Juan Pablo on his tightly sculpted ass.  Alas, it was not to be, as she also professed her love for him.  Typically, this is where the Bachelor would drop to one knee and propose to the last woman standing.   Juan Pablo however, not only did not reciprocate in telling Nikki he loved her, he took it one step further.  He actually told Nikki he had a ring in his pocket, but was not going to give it to anyone.  Instead, he offered her a rose, to continue dating and “getting to know each other,” apparently.  Nikki accepted the rose, but confusion and hurt were evident on her face – to everyone, except Clueless JP.    It was uncomfortable to watch and I am sure rather unpleasant to participate in, or see your loved one go through.

juan-pablo-worst-bachelorOnce this “Final Rose” debacle ended, the live “After the Rose” show started.  My live tweet during this portion, as I stared, open-mouthed, at the continuing train wreck, was Chris Harrison should get hazard pay for Juan Pablo’s season. Welcome to Planet Hot Mess.  I sincerely believed Juan Pablo was planning to defend himself and his actions, because he was embarrassed at how he was portrayed on the show.  In fact, he seemed to have a statement prepared about his home country, Venezuela, and the political unrest there.  What he, and many others on reality TV shows, failed to realize was that the show aired the footage it had.  In other words, they showed the world what he said and how he behaved.   Of course it was edited for television, but they did not create something out of nothing.  He became flustered and angry as he referred to drastic changes in his and Nikki’s plans, and whatever the “big surprise” was that they teased at each commercial break, was never revealed.   (He likely promised the producers a declaration of love or proposal for air time.)

“After the Rose,” also featured some of the previous contestants, including Sean and Catherine, whose wedding was televised a few weeks ago.  Also in attendance were Desiree and Chris, from the most recent “The Bachelorette,” where Juan Pablo was “discovered,” incidentally.   As Juan Pablo continued to dig himself a shallow, then exceedingly deeper grave, the other contestants and Chris Harrison tried, in vain, to throw him a lifeline.  He was given prompt after prompt to declare his love for Nikki on television, and the idiot refused to do so, citing “privacy.”    When Sean pointed out that reality TV stars had no privacy, Juan Pablo proceeded to insult them. He then, turned on Sean, who had, until that very show been his ally.  The quote of the night goes to Catherine, who said “Don’t slap the hand that fed you.”  Someone actually had to explain this to Juan Pablo, during the show.   I was hyperventilating, I was laughing so hard.

But, “Betches Love This,” capture the essence of the episode so well in The Best After The Final Rose Ceremony Recap You’ll Ever Read.

We learned two things tonight.  Just because a man is attractive does not mean he is intelligent, has substance or sensitivity.  And, finally,  ratings for the next Bachelorette, starring Andi Dorfmann, will be through the roof.

I invite you watch along with me.

Update (March 12th):  Juan Pablo wrote a blog for People Magazine that is, according to his tweets, being held up by ABC’s production crew.  Additionally, there seems to have been a “privacy pact” of sorts between the “character” of Juan Pablo and Nikki Ferrell.  He refused to profess his love on television, but did not mind doing so via his “Adventures in Loving You” YouTube video.  Bizarre.  I hope he realizes that all that ABC footage of him and Nikki is property of ABC Network, not him.

The full story can be read in full detail in this extense but excellent report from ABC Color, a major newspaper from Asuncion, Paraguay.

Commisari tells about how she was arrested by the National Guard while she was covering the protests in Altamira Square. But her arrest on February 28th was only the beginning of a terrible experience:

All detained (including Commisari) were taken to Fuerte Tiuna, the most important military base in Venezuela… …The women were separated from the men and they were put together in a small room, which they can only leave to go to the bathroom but after being previously handcuffed. Top Ten Things Not to Do If Your Book Gets a Negative Review

Posted on Updated on

I added my own advice as a reader who pays close attention to ALL reviews, and is a member of several Street Teams.  Do not send your Street Team to harass ANY reviewer, “dislike” or “vote down,” and/or leave “helpful comments” for the reviewer. Do not post an angry rant on your Facebook page or blog, decrying negative reviews. Say nothing. Do nothing. It all reflects back on the author and her/his good/poor judgment.

Here is the 36th installment of Ten Top Lists of What Not to Do by Marie Ann Bailey of 1WriteWay at http://1writeway.com and John W. Howell of Fiction Favorites at http://johnwhowell.com. These lists are simu-published on our blogs each Monday. We hope you enjoy.

10.  If your book gets a negative review, do not read the review, especially if the rating is one star.  At best, the reviewer will admit the review is based on having read only a couple of pages of your book and you can chide yourself for even bothering to read one word of the review.  At worst, you will read the review so many times  you can quote it by heart, begin to believe it, and eventually get one star tattooed on your back to atone for imagined errors in your career choice.

I’ve only worked in one organization that believed this. It was an amazing work experience – collaborative and humble. The most successful, long-term employees were people who had to WORK for what they had. They were prouder of company’s success over their own personal success. Hire people who WANT to learn on the job.  Be an organization that inspires pride in its employees.  The combination is amazing.

“Latin America: Deaf, Dumb, and Blind to Crisis in Venezuela” by Carlos Sabino

Editorial by Carlos Sabino on the lack of response by Latin American countries to the critical situation in Venezuela.   Panamá remains the only country to demand the OAS  (Organization of American States) intervene.   As a result, Venezuelan President Maduro severed economic and diplomatic ties with Panamá on Wednesday.   This was the statement released to the press by President Martinelli of Panamá, in response.  It is important to acknowledge, that Venezuela was one of the most vocal countries in calling for investigations of violent suppression of peaceful demonstrations in Panamá, in the mid to late 1980s.
