DIRTY GIRLS SOCIAL CLUB FILM UPDATE — Coming to LA!

Posted on Updated on

I read “Dirty Girls Social Club,” years ago and, identified with some of the struggles the characters faced as they balanced success in the professional arena, with our quirks and diverse identities, as Latinas. To hear that “Las Sucias,” may have their own movie, makes me happy!

Two distinctly different ways to “motivate.”

My experiences as a sorority woman were overwhelmingly positive. The DG “president” illustrates the worst type of poor decision-making that seems to be the norm among college and High School students. Her unbelievable capacity for meanness for women she calls her “sisters,” is only exacerbated by her unscrupulous use of social media to “share” her message.

All of the attention being generated by this incident, negates over 100 years of positive contributions made by sorority women, and “glorifies’ bullying and shaming. I hope this “rant” follows her, as she tries to find a job after college, and serves as a cautionary tale of what NOT to do, to make friends and influence/motivate people.

Conversely, Katelyn Campbell – LEARN HER NAME – is a shining example of how people can use their own power to uplift others, with no voice. Kudos to you, Katelyn. Wellesley is lucky to have you!

I woke up to this lovely tirade this morning:

Gawker: Sorority Girl Email (link — warning: lots of foul language!)

sorority4

To sum it up, a sorority girl wrote a foul-mouthed and abusive email to her sorority sisters, in which she berates them for being “awkward” and “boring” while hanging out with a fraternity. Besides the fact that this particular girl clearly has anger issues, a limited vocabulary, and very little self-respect, it’s also very disturbing to think of the text messages she must have received that prompted her to write this email. She says she’s been getting texts “about people LITERALLY being so &%^ing AWKWARD and so &%^ing BORING” and “about people being &%^ing WEIRD at sports … but I’ve gotten texts about people actually cheering for the opposing team” (foul language redacted). The implication is that she’s been getting these texts from members of the fraternity with which…

Heart Break. Available in Many Forms.

Yesterday, terrorists detonated several bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.  My thoughts and prayers are with the City of Boston, the victims and their families and the first responders and investigators who now have the arduous task of finding the persons responsible for this cowardly act.

Sadly, I experienced my own personal betrayal yesterday.  It came at the hands of the people I would least expect and that is why my heart is broken.  I know I will recover, but those who hurt me probably think they were doing the “right” thing.  The “right” thing would have been to look me in the eye and say, “thanks, but no thanks.”  Unfortunately, that thankless task was left to a stranger who knew nothing of my history with the people and issued the form letter-type “thank you for your service” response.  Insulting and insincere.

I expect that an appropriate back story will be created, that bears no truth.  They will say I “didn’t have enough time.” Those who really knew what I gave, know that I reorganized my life (and my husband’s life), in order to give of my time.   For many years.  My only regret is not being able to see those I deeply care for, one last time, to say goodbye, good luck and Godspeed.   That tore my heart out.

Embrace change.
Embrace change.

I leave them with these cautionary words:

“Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits; they become character;.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

“Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

This is my JAM!

I first heard “Thrift Shop,” when they debuted it on Jimmy Fallon’s show. I was semi-asleep, after studying with the TV on, and the saxophone hook had me wandering if it was dream or not.

The next day I downloaded it from itunes and started stalking youtube for the video.

They had me when that DeLorean pulled up. Epic.

Am I the Only Person Completely Hooked to “The Dead Files,” on TLC?

The premise of this show is a dual investigation of site with possible paranormal activity.  Steve, a retired NYC detective researches the history of the location, including any foul play that may have occurred on the site.  Amy, a  medium sensitive to those who have passed on, does her own “walk,” to connect with any spirits present.

The show combines two program ideas I am drawn to: police “true crime” stories and paranormal activity.  Each Friday, I struggle to stay awake, after a long week of RN school and clinical rotations, to watch the latest show.  I like that they take a pragmatic, almost skeptical, approach to each investigation.   It’s one of the few intelligent reality TV show out there, in my opinion.

There’s also a big “heebee jeebies” factor that keeps me coming back for more.  I have always had a healthy respect for spirits.  Perhaps it was my own paranormal experience, when I was a toddler.  Apparently, my Grandfather Homer, “visited” me before his spirit left us and I was found crying out for him, by my Grandmother Olga.  I don’t remember the experience at all, and have always wondered if a medium would “see” him around me, acting as my Guardian Angel.

If you haven’t watched it, give it a try.  You might be as hooked, as I am.

Becoming a Book Reviewer

Posted on Updated on

Over the past month I have ventured into the world of ebook reviews.  Not as an “expert,” just as a fan, who is moved by the creative words of women writers.    Looking back, I wrote reviews on books I either loved or hated, anything in the mid-range, got nothing.

Ironically, Facebook has brought me “closer” to one of the authors I’ve followed for many years, Julie Leto.  Before I was married, or even met my husband, I had a subscription to Harlequin books.   The books we all read, in the privacy of our own bedrooms, where the female leads were beautiful, successful, sexy.  And so were the men.

Well, Julie’s heroines were real women, of all shapes, sizes, colors and backgrounds.  She knew how to write about women with big, loud, loving families, and she wrote about the Tampa Bay area of Florida.

Imagine my surprise when I “found” her on Facebook and began to learn more about her.   It happened slowly, over the course of the 2012 Presidential Election.  I saw that our views on many subjects were similar.  For example, Julie is part of a closely-knit family with strong ethnic roots, she went to USF and pledged an NPC group.  I could identify with her and it gave me some insight into why I was so drawn in by her characters.  Each one of her female leads shared one, or more, of her personal attributes – championing those less fortunate, loyalty, friendship, fidelity, sexiness, and a distinct sense of self.

One of these days, hopefully in the near future, I will be able to meet Julie, in person, to tell her how much her writing has entertained me.

It was my pleasure to receive a review copy of her latest ebook, and introduction into the world of independent publishing, “Dirty Dare: The Rescue.”  My review can be found here:  http://www.amazon.com/review/RA5CQ46WZ6THA/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_cm_cr_notf_fhv_fbt

I enjoyed Kelsie Leverich’s “The Valentine’s Arrangement,” and this interview takes place after Ronnie and Kale’s initial story. Good stuff!

16178117Blurb:

With the freezing cold temperatures and the achromatic scenery, Fort Drum New York is the epitome of a dull and dreary winter; that is until cupid’s annual vomit infects the city with pink and red and yes, hearts and flowers.
Ronnie Clark, an edgy tattoo artist with hopes of high tailing it out of this forsaken Military town she followed her now ex-fiancé to, is counting down the days until Valentine’s Day is over. Valentine’s Day is for hopeless romantics and pathetic saps, and Ronnie couldn’t be farther away from either. Ronnie doesn’t do love. She doesn’t do flowers or dates, and she sure as hell doesn’t do romance. After her fiancé slept with a female solider while deployed, she has vowed never to fall in love again, especially with a soldier.

But as karma, fate, or the mocking divine powers of the universe would have it, her promise…

Bodice-rippers of Old, Be Gone!

Readers will get what they demand.  Since women are expecting realistic characters, who reflect current times, romance authors are delivering a variety of fantastic female lead characters.  I have seen the trend toward deeper, better developed characters for over 20 years.  The next goal is to focus on the portrayal of women of color – all colors – accurately.

To quote the “vintage” Virginia Slims’ ads – “You’ve come a long way, baby.”
