Nine celebrities who invested in going to college
These are the people who should be held up as Celebrity Role Models. Add Emmitt Smith and Shaquille O’Neal to that list.
Many, many Facebook users still don’t know that their news feeds are filtered by an algorithm
Last year I did the “stop liking things on Facebook” challenge/experiment. Instead of clicking “like” I commented on posts I liked or were of interest to me.
The resulting feed was more of what I wanted to see and of what the algorithm chose for me.
But, as a creature of habit, I went back to clicking and my feed changed back to what the algorithm decided I should see. Sigh.

The Difference Between “Flawed” Characters and “Too Dumb to Live”
Kristen’s post highlights one of my pet peeves. I have read many an inexperienced author who wants to write “trendy” stories, rather than what she/he KNOWS. Not only does the plot suffer, but ultimately, so do the characters. Just because particular types of characters are popular today, does not mean that an author should write about them. Nor does that mean they should follow the herd – off a cliff – by creating plot lines that become a caricature of themselves.
Which is more important? Plot or character? Though an interesting discussion—sort of like, Could Ronda Rousey take a Klingon with only her bare hands?—it isn’t really a useful discussion for anything other than fun. To write great fiction, we need both. Plot and characters work together. One arc drives the other much like one cog serves to turn another, thus generating momentum in the overall engine we call “STORY”.
If we goof up plot? Readers/Audiences get confused or call FOUL. Watch the movie Ouija for what I am talking about *shakes head*.
Goof up characters? No one cares about the plot.
New writers are particularly vulnerable to messing up characters. We drift too far to one end of the spectrum or the other—Super-Duper-Perfect versus Too Dumb to Live—and this can make a story fizzle because there is no way to create true dramatic tension. This leaves us (the frustrated…

I mentioned how poorly 50 Shades of Grey, tries to depict a D/s or BDSM relationship, in a few earlier posts. This article illustrated it more concisely than I could.

THIS is why Alisa Valdés is one of my favorite authors and I’m looking forward to reading her new book! Bravo!
Why I Chose to Write About a Lovable Liar
Alisa Valdés has been one of my favorite authors and I have missed her voice in the world of fiction.
“Love at First Lie,” features a main character, who, like many of us, has lied. Her lie, however, impacts at least three lives, and it will be fascinating to see how Ms. Valdés weaves this tangled tale through to its resolution.

Florida Bishop Says Church Should Respond to Marriage Equality with “Patience & Humility”
Bishop Lynch, most clergy and the laity, in our Diocese, reflect the views of most American Catholics – which is one of tolerance and love towards all our Brothers and Sisters. I am proud that he is speaking with the same tone as Pope Francis. It will take time, but I love that we are inviting dialogue.
Another bishop, Bishop Robert Lynch of St. Petersburg, has commented on the legalization of same-gender marriage in Florida, but this time he is seeking to calm the fear and hysteria fomented by the state’s other Catholic leaders.
In a piece for the Tampa Bay Times, Bishop Lynch begins with the expected language about the bishops’ view on marriage and encourages opponents of marriage equality to defend their views in dialogue with others. Less routine is what follows in the column’s second half, in which Lynch expresses some awareness of the contributions of same-gender couples to church and society. Invoking Pope Francis and the Synod on the Family, he writes:
“I also recognize that the reality of the family today, in all its complexities, presents the church with pastoral challenges as the church strives to accept people in the specific circumstances of their lives and support and encourage them in their search for…

Happy New Year 2015. Goodbye 2014.

2014 was a year that started with so much baggage from 2013. Slowly, but surely, I have emerged from the grey clouds and found new sources of joy. My progress continues.
Lucho, my sweet pitbull puppy boy entered my life after Hubby’s motorcycle accident, this Summer. He reminded us of what unconditional love was, and taught all of us – including the other three dogs – patience. Lots of patience.
A few new people also entered my life and enriched it immensely. They became special friends and I cherished the time we have spent together. I met several of my favorite authors who were even more beautiful and snarky in real life. I look forward to reading their new books and meeting more authors, readers and book reviewers.
Surprisingly, I did not missed those people who chose not to be in my life. They were merely temporary acquaintances, who taught me more about myself and why I valued honesty and personal responsibility in the people I befriended.
My sincerest hope for you tonight, or whenever the clock strikes midnight in your corner of the world, is to send 2014 off well and welcome 2015 with open arms. Happy Year of the Goat/Sheep, everyone!
